Are you looking for ways to support homeless people this winter?

Our homes wanted to do just that, and so, as a group, we partnered with a local charity, LoveBrum, to take part in the ‘Bags for Brummies’ campaign – an annual initiative that offers vital support to people experiencing homelessness in Birmingham.

Keep reading to find out more about the charity, its efforts to support homeless people, and how we’re getting involved:

Ways to Support Homeless People: About LoveBrum

Now in its seventh year, Bags for Brummies brings together individuals, schools, and businesses from across the region to help those who need it most.

The campaign is one of the charity’s most well-loved annual initiatives, with hundreds of volunteers coming together to pack and distribute bags across the city, ensuring those experiencing homelessness are not forgotten during the festive season.

With nearly 12,000 people estimated to be sleeping rough or living in temporary accommodation across Birmingham, the campaign’s impact has never been more important. Every bag filled represents a small act of kindness – one that offers both practical help and a sense of human connection.

The bags are packed with essential items such as toiletries, warm clothing, and small treats, which are then distributed throughout Birmingham during the coldest months of the year.

This simple yet powerful act of kindness has become a city tradition, reminding everyone that small gestures can make a huge difference. For our teams across our Macc Care homes, the initiative fits perfectly with our belief in compassionate care and community connection.

Coming Together for a Common Cause

Across our network of care homes, residents, staff, and loved ones are joining forces to fill as many bags as possible. The campaign has sparked a friendly competition among homes, with each one eager to collect and pack more bags than the next – all in the name of helping others.

Inside the bags are everyday items that can make life a little easier for those living without the comfort of a home. Shampoo, roll-on deodorant, toothbrushes, gloves, and feminine hygiene products are among the essentials being packed, alongside a few thoughtful extras such as small gifts, supermarket vouchers, and a sweet treat or two to bring a moment of joy.

While these may seem like simple things, for someone facing the hardship of homelessness, they can bring dignity, comfort, and the reassurance that their community cares.

Ways to Support Homeless People: Making a Difference

This sense of togetherness has always been at the heart of our ethos. From fundraising and intergenerational projects to supporting local charities, we believe that care extends beyond the home and into the wider world.

Speaking about the campaign, our director, Bhav Amlani, said: “We’re proud to be supporting this vital initiative alongside LoveBrum. At Macc Care, we believe in the power of community, and this campaign offers a practical and compassionate way to make a difference to those most in need. It’s been truly inspiring to see our homes come together to fill bags with kindness and generosity.”

A Season of Giving

The campaign has already created a ripple effect of positivity as we edge nearer to the festive season. Our residents have been sharing their own memories of past Christmases and discussing what the season means to them. For many, being able to contribute to something that helps others has brought a renewed sense of purpose and joy.

The act of giving has always been central to our values here at Macc Care, and this initiative allows our residents and staff to extend that spirit beyond our homes. It also demonstrates our belief that everyone, regardless of age or circumstance, has something valuable to give.
