That was certainly the case at Wyrley Rose, where residents, families, team members and neighbours recently joined voices for the home’s first community choir session.
Created as a joyful and inclusive activity for people of all ages and abilities, the Wyrley Rose Community Choir offers residents the opportunity to enjoy familiar music while strengthening their connections with the wider Great Wyrley community.
Striking the right note
Wyrley Rose, part of Macc Care Group, welcomed members of the local community into the home to sing alongside residents during an uplifting afternoon of music.
The choir performed a selection of much-loved songs, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow, This Is Me and Can’t Help Falling in Love.
For Wyrley Rose resident Brenda, 80, the event provided an opportunity to enjoy a lifelong passion.
She said: “It was really exciting to perform in the community choir. I have always loved singing, and activities like this make a real difference because they help me stay active and connected to the people around me. This was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.”
Fellow resident Diane also reflected on the happy memories that the session brought back.
She said: “I used to sing in Sunday school when I was little, so this was a really special afternoon. I am already looking forward to the next choir session.”
The power of music
Music can play an important role in supporting wellbeing in later life. A familiar melody can encourage conversation and bring back memories of special people and occasions.
Singing as part of a group can also create a valuable sense of belonging. There is no pressure to perform perfectly – everyone can participate in the way that feels most comfortable, whether that means singing every word or simply enjoying the atmosphere.
At Wyrley Rose, the first choir session gave residents another meaningful way to express themselves and enjoy time with people from both inside and outside the home.
Bringing the Great Wyrley community closer
The afternoon marked the beginning of a new regular initiative at Wyrley Rose.
By opening the home’s doors to neighbours, families and local groups, the choir will help residents continue to feel involved in community life while giving local people a welcoming place to meet, sing and make new connections.
The initiative has already struck a chord beyond those who attended the first session.
Paul, who grew up in the local area, contacted the home to share his support, saying: “It is such a great initiative. We were so pleased to hear about it because it brings the community together and gives people a lovely reason to visit the home.”
These connections are an important part of life at Wyrley Rose. Welcoming people into the home helps to create new friendships and show that care homes can be vibrant community spaces filled with activity and opportunity.
A wonderfully uplifting afternoon
