It’s easy to forget the important role that our routines play in our life, especially how they can boost our confidence and improve our wellbeing.

That’s why we decided to treat our Leighton Rose residents to a feel-good grooming experience, which saw Dementia Friendly Barbers recreate a traditional barbershop environment at the home.

Dementia Friendly Barbers specialises in bringing bespoke grooming experiences into dementia care homes. With a team of empathetic professionals trained in dementia-friendly practices, every visit is conducted respectfully and tailored to individual needs.

Transforming a Care Home into a Traditional Barbershop

To make the occasion feel like an authentic trip to the barbers, the team incorporated familiar elements into the experience, including pub snacks, beverages, and re-runs of Only Fools and Horses playing on a TV screen.

This allowed male residents to enjoy professional trims and hot towel shaves in a relaxed, comfortable setting, sparking memories of past trips to the barbers.

The result was a heartwarming, social experience that sparked conversation and plenty of smiles.

A Memorable Experience for Barbers, Residents and Families

Whether it was the barbers or the residents and their families, the experience at Leighton Rose is one that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Chris Floyd, the barber who led the session, said:  “I’m thankful to the home for having me, and for making it such a positive experience.”

Roger Gregory, 86: “It was a real treat to have a fresh trim and shave. I’m very grateful to the team for arranging it, and to Chris for coming in and making me feel so relaxed throughout.”

The positive effects were also felt by families, with Lynsey, whose father lives at the home, sharing:

“After the visit, Dad called me to tell me he’d had a haircut and a shave and now feels great!”

Supporting Confidence, Identity, and Wellbeing

The visit reflected our commitment to enhancing everyday life for residents through meaningful experiences that support confidence, identity and wellbeing – especially for those living with dementia.

Bhav Amlani, Director of Macc Care Group, added: “At Macc Care, we prioritise the health, comfort, wellbeing and dignity of each of our residents, and we’re proud to be able to offer them such a wonderful service. Chris is not only a fantastic barber, but a natural when it comes to making our residents feel at home, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him back soon.”
