How are we giving back to the community?

At Macc Care, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to support both our residents and the communities around us. At Willow Rose, one recent initiative has done exactly that – combining creativity and generosity in the sweetest way possible.

What started as a simple, in-home activity quickly blossomed into something much bigger, as our residents came together to make homemade strawberry jam in support of local food banks. It’s a wonderful example of how small ideas, when led by passion and purpose, can grow into something truly impactful.

Giving Back to the Community: Homemade Jam

As part of our commitment to giving back to the community, our residents at Willow Rose rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into every stage of the process of making jam – from preparing the fruit to stirring the mixture and carefully spooning it into jars. For many, it was a chance to reconnect with familiar skills and traditions, bringing back fond memories while learning something new alongside friends.

Activities like this are about so much more than simply passing the time. They help to support wellbeing by encouraging movement, stimulating the senses and fostering a sense of independence. Most importantly, they provide a real sense of purpose – something that is incredibly important in later life. Knowing that their efforts would go on to support others in the community made the experience all the more meaningful for everyone involved.

To make the project even more special, our residents added their own personal touches. They designed bespoke jar lids and even wrote a poem to accompany the finished products – a beautiful reflection of the pride they felt in what they had created. These thoughtful details helped turn each jar into something truly unique.

How We’re Giving Back to the Community

What has been particularly heartwarming is how the initiative has extended beyond the walls of Willow Rose. As well as selling the jam within the home, we have been able to share jars with local cafés, giving the wider community the opportunity to enjoy our residents’ creations while supporting a fantastic cause. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with more than 40 jars already sold and plenty more in the making.

All proceeds from the jam sales are being donated directly to local food banks, helping to provide essential food and toiletries to those who need them most. It’s a cause that resonates deeply with our residents, many of whom are passionate about giving back and supporting others.

About Our Jam

One of our residents, Alan, shared just how much the experience meant to him. At 92, taking part in the jam-making brought back vivid memories of his childhood, when his father would make jam during a time when ingredients were rationed. For Alan, being involved again was not only enjoyable, but deeply nostalgic – a reminder of the past and a way to reconnect with meaningful moments from his life.

He also spoke about the sense of belonging he feels at Willow Rose, and how activities like this help create a vibrant, engaging environment where there is always something to look forward to. That feeling of purpose and connection is at the heart of everything we do at Macc Care.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone at Willow Rose for bringing this idea to life. It’s a perfect example of how our homes are not just places of care, but thriving communities where residents are encouraged to share their ideas, pursue their interests and make a positive difference.

As the initiative continues, we look forward to seeing how far it goes – raising even more for local food banks and spreading a little extra joy along the way.
